Whitening Treatment

How does it work?

Tooth whitening treatments work by using bleaching agents, typically containing hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide to penetrate the enamel (outer layer) of the teeth, react with the discoloured molecules within the teeth, altering their structure and ultimately break down stains or discoloration.

Whitening Treatment Options

Chair-side Whitening

If you want fast results, this is the one to go for. Will usually have a noticeable difference in tooth shade after the 2 hour session.

Take Home Whitening Kit

Do you want the flexibility of determining when to start and stop your whitening, and you’re not in a hurry for results? The home kit is suitable for you!

You will be provided with a whitening tray customised to your teeth, along with some tubes of whitening gel. Use it daily when you want to whiten your teeth, then once you’re happy with the tooth shade, use it once in a while for maintenance.

Dissolvable Whitening Strips

These strips are the most convenient and fuss-free option. All you need to do is to wrap the strip around your teeth, and it will dissolve within 15 minutes!

The brand we use is White Dental Beauty, made in the UK, and only available in dental clinics.

There are many whitening products on the internet, but do be aware that while they might help with some stains, these products generally contain very little to no hydrogen/carbamide peroxide due to regulations set by Singapore which restrict tooth whitening products of more than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide to only be sold by registered dentists. Hence, their efficacy is likely to be very low.

For the best whitening results, we recommend getting both the chair-side and the take-home whitening kit, for which we offer a discount if purchased together.

What To Expect

Chair-side Whitening

~2 hours:

Our dentists will take initial photos of your teeth, then apply a protective barrier to separate your gums from the whitening agent. The whitening agent is applied to the teeth, and depending on type, a laser may be used to activate the agent.

The whitening agent is left on the teeth for a specified amount of time. This process is repeated usually 3 times in a session.

Final photos are then taken and hopefully you’ve got teeth a couple shades lighter!

Take-Home Whitening

First Visit (~30 minutes):

We will take an impression of your teeth so that custom whitening trays can be made.

Second Visit (~30 minutes):

You will be given the custom made whitening tray with whitening kit. We will provide instructions for use, and we will take photos of your teeth to record the initial shade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Unfortunately, no it isn’t. The results of chair-side whitening are expected to last for roughly 12 – 18 months.

Polishing is done during your regular cleaning, and is a different procedure. Polishing helps remove stains that will make your teeth look whiter to some extent, but is not as effective as teeth whitening treatment.

Avoid food and beverage which causes stains such as wine, tea, coffee, berries.

Avoid smoking, and brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once a day as buildup of plaque can cause discoloration.

Using whitening toothpaste also helps to remove stains and brighten teeth over time.

You may experience some tooth sensitivity after whitening treatment, however, this is temporary and can be relieved by using sensitive toothpaste or over the counter painkillers if necessary.

Not everyone is a suitable candidate for tooth whitening. Individuals with certain dental conditions, such as tooth decay, gum disease, or extremely sensitive teeth, may not be recommended for tooth whitening until their oral health issues are addressed.

Tooth whitening treatments primarily work on natural teeth and may not have the same effect on dental restorations like crowns/ veneers/fillings. If you have dental restorations, it is important to discuss tooth whitening with our dentists to understand how it may impact the overall appearance of your smile and whether any adjustments or replacements may be necessary after whitening.
